Social Responsibility Projects

For a healthy public...

Abdi İbrahim sees social responsibility activities as an integral part of its essential activities and develops projects primarily in the area of health. The company aims at contributing to a sustainable social structure through the social responsibility projects it develops.

Some of the company's most important social responsibility projects include the following:

The Abdi İbrahim Primary School, which opened its doors in 2007 in Bahçeşehir, is the largest school in Turkey to have been built and donated by a private individual. The school has 42 classrooms and a 1,200-student capacity.

The "Turkey, Strong as Iron" Campaign, organized by the T.C. Ministry of Health and sponsored by Abdi İbrahim, was carried out in 81 provinces to eliminate iron deficiency anemia, which is a major threat to human health and is seen in 50% of babies and pregnant women in Turkey.

As part of the project, infants and children between the ages of 12 months and four years were provided with iron supplementation at Health Centers and at Mother-Child Health Center associated with the T.C. Ministry of Health.

Abdi İbrahim, which places great importance on the healthy physical and mental development of children, who are the future of Turkey, donated $750 thousand and 200 units of iron drops to the project.

Conducted through the unconditional support of Abdi İbrahim, the Incidence of Metabolic Syndrome in Turkey Study (METSAR), is the most comprehensive coronary health risk study ever in Turkey and constitutes an important resource in the creation of national coronary health policies. While providing the medical world with valuable data, the study became a crucial resource for raising public awareness of coronary health.

Abdi İbrahim has its roots in a pharmacist family and, wanting to conserve the history of Turkish pharmaceutical history, it is transmitting its recollection of the past to new generations. The Company has put together the most important Turkish Pharmaceutical History Archive in Turkey, thereby having preserved the history of the Republican era. Among the historical pharmacies exhibited at Abdi İbrahim Tower and its R&D Center are the Heybeliada Halk Pharmacy and the Kastamonu Karadeniz Pharmacy. The archive presents the historical process stretching from drugs that were panaceas to modern ones.

Abdi İbrahim proved the extent of its concern for the environment through an agreement made with ÇEVKO (Environmental Protection and Packaging Recovery and Recycling Foundation) in 2005. By handing over its recycling obligations to ÇEVKO, it won the right to use the Green Dot on its packages. The Green Dot means that the proprietor of the packaging being used in the market has met its recycling responsibilities. The Green Dot practice is being used extensively in 25 European countries and in Canada.

Efficient Energy Use Projects were designed to increase energy efficiency at the Abdi brahim Production Facilities in Esenyurt by supporting the 5-year production expansion plans there and to reduce energy consumption. Abdi İbrahim won two awards at once in the “Energy Efficiency Project Contest” held by the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources for its 35% energy savings achieved on account of these efficiency projects. Not being satisfied with this award, Abdi İbrahim signed a voluntary agreement in 2009 with EİE (Electrical Power Resources Survey Administration). After the three-year follow-up period and with the efficiency increase promised for the end of 2012, Abdi İbrahim became a candidate for the 100 thousand TL award.

Among Abdi İbrahim's goals with respect to efficient use of energy is that of serving as a model for the sector. By keeping abreast of technology, it seeks to put its notion of constant efficiency into action in every area and on all scales.

That the energy it saves is equivalent to the energy needs for a year of a 3,000-unit residential area and is worth approximately $1 million is the greatest indicator of the importance of its efficiency projects.

Abdi İbrahim, the first company in the pharmaceutical sector having a certified energy manager, was the first and only company to achieve a record reduction in energy use between 2001 – 2005, despite a 50% increase in production.
